The National Chairperson of the Bus and Taxi Owners Association of Zambia, Sydney Chewe, has called for stricter enforcement of anti-littering regulations and urged public transport operators to provide waste bins for passengers as part of efforts to maintain cleaner cities.
Chewe noted that, while some coach services currently use plastic bags to collect rubbish, many local buses lack permanent bins, making it challenging for passengers to dispose of waste responsibly. In an interview with the Zambian Business Times (ZBT), he emphasized that bus crews should actively guide passengers on proper waste disposal practices, rather than allowing litter to be discarded out of bus windows.
permanent bins installed, more operators must adopt this measure in tandem with the robust enforcement of existing anti-littering laws.
“Every bus is supposed to have a bin, and the two crew members should interact with passengers to provide guidance on waste disposal,” Chewe stated.
He encouraged passengers to hand their rubbish to conductors for appropriate disposal instead of throwing it onto the streets.

Chewe also pointed out that, although some buses already have permanent bins installed, more operators must adopt this measure in tandem with the robust enforcement of existing anti-littering laws.
“Law enforcement must start acting so that we have a sector that is in order,” he urged. Chewe concluded by emphasizing that keeping the environment clean is a shared responsibility requiring cooperation among passengers, transport operators, and law enforcement agencies.Bus operators urged to install bins & promote responsible waste disposal
