China Rejects U.S. Pressure Campaign Against Iran

China has rejected the United States’ push for countries around the world to join efforts to economically isolate Iran, saying sanctions and pressure will not resolve the conflict.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on August 21 that Beijing believes the current confrontation should be addressed through political and diplomatic channels rather than economic coercion.

“Sanctions and pressure will not help resolve the issue,” Lin said, calling on all relevant parties to act responsibly and pursue a political and diplomatic solution.

The statement came after Washington announced plans for what U.S. officials describe as the toughest sanctions in history against Iran, while urging countries including China to cooperate with the campaign.

China’s position is particularly significant because Beijing is Iran’s largest oil customer, making Chinese participation a key factor in Washington’s attempt to restrict Tehran’s oil revenues and economic lifelines.

The dispute is therefore expanding beyond the U.S.-Iran confrontation itself, with Washington attempting to build an international economic pressure campaign while Beijing openly rejects the strategy.

China’s latest response signals that Beijing is not prepared to simply follow Washington’s sanctions strategy, instead calling for negotiations and diplomacy to resolve the wider crisis.
