Former presidential press aide, Amos Chanda, has been sued in the Lusaka High Court by money lender Bruce Choongo over an alleged K3 million unpaid debt.

Choongo is seeking payment of the outstanding K3 million, interest, exemplary damages and costs of the action.

According to a statement of claim filed in the High Court, Choongo alleged that he lent Chanda K3 million on January 16, 2026, under an agreement that the money would be repaid within one month, together with 20 percent interest amounting to K600,000.

Choongo claimed that after Chanda failed to honour the initial repayment agreement, the parties entered into several revised repayment arrangements.

Under an agreement dated February 16, Chanda allegedly committed to pay K3.9 million by March 2, 2026.

When the payment was not made, Chanda allegedly wrote another commitment letter on March 1, rescheduling payment to March 4 and undertaking to pay K4.08 million, inclusive of interest.

The plaintiff claims the repayment commitments continued, with another agreement entered into on March 26 under which Chanda allegedly undertook to pay K4.13 million by March 30.

Choongo said that, “out of goodwill”, he later agreed on May 4 to accept K3.2 million as full and final settlement, to be paid in instalments.

The agreed instalments were K1.2 million by May 15, K500,000 by May 25, K500,000 by May 31 and K1 million by June 15.

However, Choongo claimed Chanda only paid K200,000, leaving a balance of K3 million outstanding.

In the statement of claim, Choongo said: “Despite repeated written and oral reminders, the defendant has ignored, refused and/or neglected to settle the outstanding balance.”

The plaintiff further stated that on June 30, Chanda, through his lawyers, requested to settle the outstanding K3 million within six weeks.

Choongo said that despite the request, the debt remained unpaid.

He subsequently instructed his lawyers to issue a letter of demand on July 8, but alleges that Chanda still failed, refused or neglected to settle the outstanding amount.

The matter is before the Lusaka High Court.
