President Hakainde Hichilema has told public office holders to put the interests of the people above personal gain in the discharge of their duties.

The President, who was speaking at the 2026 Samu Lya Moomba Traditional Ceremony in Monze District yesterday, also said genuine service to citizens would ultimately translate into shared national prosperity.

The Head of State said leadership should be anchored on selfless service, unity and a collective commitment to national development, rather than individual interests.

President Hichilema thanked Zambians for giving the United Party for National Development (UPND) another mandate to govern, pledging that his administration would remain focused on serving the people.

“Public office is meant to serve the people of Zambia and not for personal gain. When we work for the people genuinely, our own interests will be taken care of,” he said.

The President called on Zambians to safeguard the peace and security the country had continued to enjoy, warning that political differences should never be allowed to undermine national stability and economic progress.

President Hichilema said the country needed a peaceful and secure environment to attract the investment required to drive economic growth under the Government’s Grow Zambia Agenda.

He also extended a message of reconciliation to political opponents who lost in the recent elections.

Mr Hichilema further pledged to attend traditional ceremonies he had been unable to attend during the election period.

He said the conclusion of the electoral process would allow him to reconnect with traditional leaders and communities across the country.

The President described the Samu Lya Moomba ceremony as historically significant, particularly in relation to Zambia’s struggle for independence and the role played by various locations in the liberation struggle.
