A road traffic accidents involving Power Tools public service bus and a Volvo Truck and trailer along the Great East Road in Lukwipa area of Rufunsa District has claimed the lives of 4 people among them the driver and his son.
36 other passengers are reported to have sustained injuries and are currently admitted in hospital.
Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi says the accident occurred around 11:00 hours on Thursday when the bus was travelling towards Chipata, while the Volvo truck was travelling towards Lusaka.
He says preliminary investigations indicate that the truck driver allegedly moved into the opposite lane while attempting to avoid a stationary vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision with the oncoming bus.
Mr. Chilabi says the bus driver, Ask Mulobela, and the conductor, Innocent Mulobela, who is reported to be the driver’s son, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Mpanshya Mission Hospital.
He adds that two passengers travelling in the truck also died, one of whom has been identified as Fortune Mwanza, while the other is yet to be identified.
Meanwhile, 35 of the 57 passengers who were on board the bus sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at Mpanshya Hospital.
The truck driver, Paul Banda, aged 25, of Sinda District, also suffered serious injuries and has been admitted to the same hospital.
