THE Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has announced the death of former Copper Queens coach Bruce Mwape. He was 67.
FAZ said Mwape died at Nchanga South Mine Hospital in Chingola after a short illness.
FAZ President Keith Mweemba described the death as a “huge shock to the football family and the nation as a whole.”
“The death of Coach Mwape is a huge shock to the football family and the nation as a whole. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and can only wish them God’s strength at this hour,” Mweemba said.
Mwape was appointed Copper Queens coach in 2018. Under his leadership, Zambia reached back-to-back Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, won WAFCON bronze in 2022, and made a historic first FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance in Australia/New Zealand in 2023.
He also qualified the Copper Queens for a record three WAFCON tournaments in 2018, 2022, and 2024 played in 2025.
Mwape previously served as Under-17 Men’s National Team coach in 2015.
Mwape’s son Chikonde said his father suffered a suspected stroke last Tuesday and was later hospitalized.
FAZ said the secretariat is in touch with the family in Chingola and will provide full details in due course.
This is according to a press statement issued by Nkweto Tembwe, Head of Media and Communications, Football Association of Zambia.
