By Memory Malisawa Germany has committed approximately 80-million Euros to Zambia for 2026 and 2027, with part of the funding targeted at strengthening the health sector. Health Minister Professor ROMA CHILENGI says the commitment comprises 34-million Euros in financial cooperation and 46.5 million Euros in technical cooperation. Professor CHILENGI said this in a speech read on his behalf by Dr George Sinyangwe during the German National Day celebrations in Lusaka. He said Germany’s support to Zambia’s health sector covers food and nutrition, health system strengthening, and health emergency preparedness and response. Professor CHILENGI says Germany, through KFW Development Bank and other partners, contributed 20-million Euros towards Zambia’s COVID-19 response. Germany also contributed a further 10-million Euros to the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Trust Fund through the World Bank, benefiting Zambia through cross-border disease surveillance and coordination. Professor CHILENGI says Zambia is looking to deepen cooperation with Germany in primary health care, health workforce development, digital health systems, health infrastructure, research, technology and sustainable health financing. He says the next chapter of Zambia-Germany cooperation should also create opportunities for investment, knowledge transfer, skills development and stronger private sector partnerships. And German Ambassador to Zambia SOENKE SIEMON says Germany has a vested interest in the success of Zambia’s growth agenda, noting that President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’S efforts to drive economic growth and improve the lives of Zambians are also in the interest of international partners. Mr. SIEMON says Zambia is an attractive destination for German businesses and that continued improvements in the business environment will attract more investment. Mr. SIEMON cited the supply of advanced radiotherapy equipment by Siemens to the Cancer Diseases Hospital as an example of successful German-Zambian cooperation.
