President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA says Government is developing a policy that honors and recognises freedom fighters for their contribution to the country’s independence.
President HICHILEMA says the proposed policy will provide guidance on Government’s engagement with veterans, while an appropriate office would provide a platform for freedom fighters to interact with authorities.
He says this is an initiative that Government has advanced to preserve the legacy of freedom fighters.
President HICHILEMA said this in a speech read on his behalf by Minister of Green Economy and Environment Dr GILBERT SIAME during the 30th memorial anniversary of Zambia’s first Vice President REUBEN CHITANDIKA KAMANGA .
The Head of state said the late Mr. KAMANGA, made significant contributions to the liberation struggle and the country’s early national development.

He noted that Mr. KAMANGA spearheaded the development of Zambia’s First National Development Plan, which provided a framework for translating the aspirations of the newly independent nation into development.
The President also called for the preservation of the values demonstrated by the country’s founding generation, including sacrifice, hard work, humility and national unity, under the motto One Zambia, One Nation.
And former Vice President INONGE WINA has called for unity among political players, stressing the need for politicians to embrace one another as members of one national family despite their political differences.
Meanwhile, son of the late Reuben Chitandika Kamanga, MADALISTO KAMNAGA has expressed gratitude to Government for honoring his father’s legacy through its participation in the 30th memorial anniversary.
He said the commemoration serves as an important reminder of his father’s contribution to Zambia’s independence and nation-building, while underscoring the importance of preserving the values for which he stood.
Mr. KAMANGA served the country from 24 October 1964 – October 1967.
