JAPAN SCRAMBLES F-15 FIGHTERS AFTER CHINESE Y-9 RECONNAISSANCE FLIGHT
Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force reportedly scrambled F-15 fighter jets after a Chinese Y-9 reconnaissance aircraft was detected operating over the East China Sea.
The Chinese aircraft reportedly flew south of the Danjo Islands, before heading toward Okinawa and eventually returning to China.
Japanese authorities said the aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter Japanese sovereign airspace.
However, Tokyo is increasingly concerned about what it describes as intensified Chinese aerial activity in the region.
Y-9 reconnaissance variants are capable of collecting electronic intelligence and monitoring radar and communications systems, raising concerns in Japan about Chinese surveillance of the Nansei Islands and the Taiwan area.
The latest incident comes amid growing strategic tensions between Tokyo and Beijing, with Japan closely monitoring Chinese military activity around its southwestern territories.
The region is strategically important because of its proximity to Taiwan and major maritime routes across the Western Pacific.
Japan’s repeated fighter scrambles reflect growing concerns that increased Chinese reconnaissance activity could provide Beijing with valuable intelligence on Japanese military capabilities and regional defenses.
