By Arnold Tutu

A former Project Accountant at the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, CASIOUS MWEETWA, has been arrested for alleged corrupt practices involving K44,657,600 in funds intended for the Social Cash Transfer –SCT- Programme.

In a statement to ZNBC news, Anti-Corruption Commission –ACC- Head of Corporate Communications JOSEPH MWENYA said the 47-year-old former accountant faces eight counts of conspiracy to defraud the Government of the Republic of Zambia and theft by public servant.

Mr. MWENYA said the alleged offences occurred between May 1, 2025 and August 31, 2026, during which the funds were allegedly transferred in eight separate transactions into the Itezhi-Tezhi District Welfare Assistance Committee account.

He said the transfers were allegedly made under the pretext that the money was intended for Social Cash Transfer administrative activities in Itezhi-Tezhi District, when this was not the case.

The ACC alleges that the funds were subsequently diverted for personal gain through several cash withdrawals from the account.

Mr. MWENYA says the money is reasonably suspected to have been used to acquire and maintain various properties, including real estate and motor vehicles.

The Social Cash Transfer Programme provides financial assistance to vulnerable households.

Mr. MWEETWA has since been released on bond and is expected to appear in court soon.

He has warned public officers and other individuals entrusted with public funds against abusing, diverting or stealing public resources for personal gain.

Mr. MWENYA said public funds are intended to benefit citizens and support national development, adding that no position of trust places anyone above the law.
