A 300-million United States Dollar project to connect Kalumbila in Zambia to Kolwezi in the Democratic Republic of Congo has moved to the final stage of development. Information and Media Director Spokesperson HENRY KAPATA says the development follows the signing of a Strategic Framework Agreement by the project partners to finance, build and operate the 200-kilometre high-voltage power line with a 700-megawatt transmission capacity. Mr. KAPATA says the interconnector will have the potential to supply up to 550 megawatts of electricity into the DRC to support mining and industrial activity,. He says the project will create an additional market for electricity generated in Zambia, with scope for future expansion beyond 1,000 megawatts. He adds that the project will strengthen electricity trade between the two countries and support wider regional infrastructure and economic development ambitions linked to the Lobito Corridor.
