LIBERIA: First 20 US Deportees Arrive In Liberia Under Third-Country Deal

Twenty people deported from the United States have arrived in Liberia, marking the start of an agreement that could see up to 1,200 people transferred to the West African country over 12 months.

The group landed at Roberts International Airport outside Monrovia under tight security and with limited public access. Liberian officials say the deportees may include nationals from Africa, North and South America, and the Caribbean.

The arrangement is part of a broader US immigration policy under President Donald Trump that involves sending deportees to third countries instead of their home nations.

Ghana, South Sudan, Rwanda, Eswatini, Sierra Leone and Liberia have all accepted migrants from the US under similar deals.

Immigration lawyers have raised concerns about the rights of deportees sent to countries they do not call home.
