Newton Kasonso, the 49-year-old brother of the late Dr. Jones Kasonso, who recently died in the United States, has been arrested and charged with three offences, including seditious practices, insulting language and prohibited use of computer systems.

Police Public Relations Officer Chipo Kaitisha says the charges relate to alleged seditious statements made on social media on August 18, 2026.

Police say Mr. Kasonso was detained on October 27, 2026, upon his arrival in Zambia, following investigations into the matter.

Police have clarified that his arrest is not connected to the collection, transportation or possession of his late brother’s ashes, which had already been handed over to the family.

Mr. Kasonso remains in police custody awaiting court appearance.
