Zambia Land Alliance Director Patrick Musole has called on the newly appointed Minister of Lands Patrick Mucheleka to ease the struggle attached to the process of changing customary land to statutory and administration generally.

Customary land administration in Zambia is a contentious subject, largely due to lack of formal documentation, clear boundaries and a gap in coordination between the government and traditional leaders.

Speaking in an interview with the Zambian Business Times— ZBT, Musole hauled the appointment of Mucheleka but urged him to also expedite the changes and proposed reforms of the Lands Act. “As ZLA, we welcome the minister, but he is not a stranger; he was the Permanent Secretary.

Some of the issues that we engaged him over have not yet been resolved, but we will continue from where we ended.

We are confident that he will deliver; it will be easier to progress,” he added.

Musole also urged the new Minister to pay attention and capitalize as well as refine the Land Audit project, which is supported by the European Union.

The Land Audit aims to improve land administration and management by collecting accurate data on land tenure, land use, and ownership and there about 20 districts which are being targeted.

“We expect the expediting of the current legislation that is going through review of the Lands Act because it is holding a lot of things, and he should pay attention to the customary land administration due to finalize the governance of land supported by the European Union,” he added.
