A 55-year-old referee, Donald Tonga, was allegedly beaten to death by players and supporters during a replayed match at the Andrew Lubusha football tournament yesterday.
The incident occurred between 12:05 and 13:30 hours at Mchenga Primary School Grounds in Chief Mafuta’s area, during a game between Mikango United and Leopard United.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the death and identified the victim as Tonga, a resident of Madalistso Farm.
According to Mr Mweemba, the tournament is sponsored by Chipangali MP Andrew Lubusha and features 16 teams competing for a K5,000 prize in a knockout format.
Tensions began during an earlier fixture on May 5, when Tonga awarded a penalty to Leopard United while Mikango United led 2-1. The decision sparked confusion and the match was abandoned. Both teams met on May 6 and agreed to replay the game from the start.
During the first half of the replay, Mikango United players became incensed after Tonga allegedly ignored a foul. They confronted him on the pitch and, joined by supporters, attacked him with fists, kicks, stones, sticks, and a bamboo stick as he tried to escape.
Efforts by some fans to intervene failed. Tonga was rushed to Chamasongo Clinic but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police have launched investigations. No arrests had been confirmed at the time of reporting.
