UPND Media Director MARK SIMUUWE says Zambia’s target of attracting five million tourists will boost foreign exchange earnings and create economic opportunities for ordinary citizens.

Reacting to President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’s National Address, at a press briefing today, Mr SIMUUWE said increased foreign currency inflows from tourism can help meet demand for U.S dollars on the market and potentially support the stability of the Kwacha.

He says the increased tourist arrivals will benefit hotels, lodges, local farmers, restaurants, transport operators and traders selling traditional artifacts.

Mr. SIMUUWE says tourism also presents an opportunity to create jobs, grow businesses and increase revenue for the aviation industry through airport landing fees and other charges.

He says Zambia has made progress in increasing tourist arrivals from about 500,000 annually to more than 2.5 million, attributing the growth partly to government interventions, including the relaxation of visa requirements.

He has expressed support for President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’s efforts to make the five-million-tourist target a reality.

He says social protection programmes, free education and school feeding initiatives are among the interventions intended to improve the lives of ordinary Zambians.

Meanwhile, Mr SIMUUWE says security at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport is critical and must not be compromised.

He says modern technology and established security procedures are essential in safeguarding airports and ensuring the smooth operation of airport activities.

Mr SIMUUWE adds that security concerns should be handled by trained personnel, while members of the public should understand that the measures are intended to protect everyone and should not cause unnecessary alarm.

The National Airport Corporation recently issued a travel advisory that passengers should arrive three hours earlier than the usual two hours for international flights and two hours for domestic flights.
