The K7, Haircut: When Nomads Golf Zambia Turned Hair Into Hope

For two and a half years, Alan Costley, 62, kept his hair. It became part of him – familiar on the fairways of golf clubs, at the monthly draws, at the 19th hole.
Then Nomads Golf Zambia decided that hair could do more than just grow. It could give.
Ahead of its annual Charity Golf Tournament held recently at Lusaka Golf Club, members were looking for a bold way to raise funds. The idea was simple and a little mischievous: set a target of K100,000. Once members pledged enough to hit it, Alan would finally go to the barber and have it all cut off.
As if that wasn’t enough, another popular member joined the cause. 2021 Nomads Zambia Captain, Shiggi Patel, 41, known for his signature goatee beard, agreed that his beard would also go under the razor once the target was met.
It was charity with a twist – and Nomads being Nomads, the members rose to the occasion.

Pledges poured in from across the club. Not only was the K100,000 target met – it was beaten. By the end, K157,000 had been raised.
True to their word, in front of cheering members, Alan’s two-and-a-half-year-old locks were cut, and Shiggi’s trademark goatee was shaved clean. Two looks gone, but for a good reason.
All proceeds will go to charity, forming part of Nomads Golf Zambia’s ongoing fundraising efforts linked to its recent Charity Golf Tournament.
It was a late addition to the charity drive, but one that captured everything Nomads stands for – fellowship, fun, and giving back.
From hair today to hope tomorrow, Alan and Shiggi proved that sometimes a haircut is more than just a haircut.
About Nomads Golf Zambia: Nomads is a fellowship of golfers who are also dedicated to raising funds for those in need and for the furtherance of the game of we love so much.
