By Fortune Sinyangwe Three illegal miners have died after the ground collapsed at the OB‑19 Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) dumpsite in Chingola, Copperbelt Province. Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer RAE HAMOONGA confirmed the incident, which occurred yesterday, 23 September 2026, at around 18:20 hours. Mr HAMOONGA identified the deceased as BENJAMIN KAMPELO, aged 17, KACHAMA KAMBONGO, aged 18, and MISHECK MWANZA, aged 20. Their bodies have since been retrieved from beneath the rubble. Preliminary investigations suggest that after KCM workers left the site, a group of illegal miners entered to scavenge for stones suspected to contain copper ore. In the scramble, a section of the hill collapsed, burying some of them. Mr HAMOONGA said several miners managed to escape, but the three victims could not. He added that an inquiry file has been opened and police will revisit the scene to ensure no other persons remain trapped.
