By Mark Ziligone

The United Kingdom says it remains committed to working with Zambia and other countries to strengthen global health and fight infectious diseases.

UK Members of Parliament representative MICHAEL PAYNE says Britain will continue supporting multilateral health programmes targeting HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.

Mr. PAYNE was speaking when a delegation of UK Members of Parliament paid a courtesy call on Health Minister ROMA CHILENGI.

He said the delegation will return to the United Kingdom as friends and advocates for Zambia.

Mr. PAYNE said countries need to strengthen cooperation in global health rather than reduce their efforts.

He also congratulated the Zambian Government on progress in its health cooperation with the United States.

Meanwhile, Professor CHILENGI said Zambia values its long-standing partnership with the United Kingdom, particularly in the health sector.

Professor CHILENGI said the partnership is demonstrated through the Global Fund, which has supported Zambia’s fight against HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.

He said Government has increased the health budget from 13 billion kwacha in 2022 to 26 billion kwacha in 2026.

Professor CHILENGI said the increase demonstrates Government’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of citizens.

He added that Zambia has made progress in the fight against HIV, with the country now estimated to be at 98-98-97 on the HIV treatment targets.

Professor CHILENGI said AIDS-related deaths have also declined from 25-thousand in 2010 to 15-thousand in 2025.
