By Honester Mshoka Vice President Mutale Nalumango has called for improved settlement planning to ensure communities are located away from disaster-prone areas, as part of efforts to reduce the impact of natural disasters. Speaking during the commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction in Lusaka, Mrs. Nalumango said proper settlement planning is critical in preventing the loss of life and property caused by disasters. She said traditional leaders have an important role in guiding communities towards safer settlements, protecting the environment and promoting disaster preparedness initiatives. Mrs. Nalumango also urged the United Nations system to continue supporting Government through technical expertise, financing, innovation and capacity building to strengthen disaster preparedness and response mechanisms. The Vice President said Government is enhancing the national disaster risk management system by strengthening institutional frameworks and ensuring clear responsibilities from the national level down to local communities. Meanwhile, Acting United Nations Resident Coordinator James Wakiaga called for the promotion of a stronger culture of disaster prevention and preparedness. In remarks delivered on his behalf by World Health Organization Representative Peter Lasuba, Dr. Wakiaga said housing development should prioritise affordability, inclusivity and accessibility to ensure homes meet the needs of all citizens, including persons with disabilities.
