What started as a normal Yango trip in Lusaka’s Matero township ended up being an unforgettable moment after a yango driver found himself helping a woman deliver her baby inside his car before they could reach the hospital.
Bwalya, a Yango driver who is also a registered nurse from Matero North, narrated how he received a Yango order from a woman who wanted to be picked up from Cornerstone Quarry area and taken to Matero Level One Hospital.
“The woman was already experiencing labour contractions when I picked her up”, he said.
“But before we could reach the hospital, things moved quickly. The woman entered the second stage of labour and I realised the baby was coming”, he added.
With his nursing experience, Bwalya had to put aside his driving skills, as he had to park and assist the woman. She safely delivered the inside the vehicle.

Bwalya also had to manage the third stage of labour, including the delivery of the placenta, before continuing to Matero Level One Hospital where the mother and baby were handed over to health workers for further care.
After further observations at the hospital, both the mother and baby were reported to be in good condition.
Bwalya later followed up to find out how they were doing and found they had been discharged, he then picked up the mother and her newborn baby and took them home.
What was supposed to be a normal Yango trip ended with Bwalya putting both his driving skills and nursing skills to use and helped bring a new life into the world.
