MORE than 2,000 young people will on October 1 this year begin what Government has described as the country’s largest national youth internship programme.
Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe said the programme will provide young people with practical work experience, mentorship and opportunities to develop professional skills.
The initiative follows President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive at the National Youth Indaba in March this year for government institutions to create meaningful opportunities for young people to gain workplace experience.

Cabinet subsequently directed ministries, provincial administrations, agencies, commissions and quasi government institutions to participate by placing youth interns in their respective institutions for one year.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Chileshe said the roll-out will include advertising internship opportunities, selecting eligible applicants and placing them in participating institutions.
He said the phased implementation will give institutions adequate time to prepare for an effective start to the programme.
Mr Chileshe said interns will be placed in offices up to principal level, in line with the approved internship placement framework and operational requirements of institutions at district and provincial levels.
He said the interns will be assigned meaningful responsibilities designed to build practical knowledge, strengthen professional competences and enable them to contribute to their host institutions.
The programme, he said, will also require institutions to provide mentorship, supervision and a conducive learning environment throughout the internship period.
The incremental value of the programme lies in its scale, bringing more than 2,000 young people into structured workplace placements while creating a common framework across government institutions.
The initiative is intended to address gaps in work experience and exposure while supporting skills development and youth employment. https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
