Zambia has called for stronger global preparedness and cooperation to prevent and respond to future pandemics.

Health Minister ROMA CHILENGI delivered Zambia’s national statement at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response.

Professor CHILENGI delivered the statement on behalf of President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA.

He said pandemic preparedness must be properly planned, financed and tested to ensure countries can respond effectively to future health emergencies.

Professor CHILENGI said Zambia is committed to working with other Member States, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention – Africa CDC – the United Nations and the World Health Organization.

He said the COVID-19 pandemic showed how a health emergency can quickly develop into an economic, social and development crisis.

Professor CHILENGI said the pandemic also exposed inequalities in access to vaccines, diagnostic services, medicines and other life-saving technologies.

He said the experience calls for stronger global cooperation and fairer access to essential health products and technologies.
