By Patricia Banda

Zambia has pledged to uphold the rule of law at both national and international levels, describing it as a foundation for multilateral cooperation, international peace and security.

Justice Permanent Secretary – Legal MWENYA BWALYA says the rule of law is essential to strengthening institutions and promoting justice at all levels.

Ms. BWALYA was speaking when she delivered a statement before the Sixth Committee of the United Nations under Agenda Item 84.

She said the Government, under the Eighth National Development Plan -8NDP, had undertaken significant structural reforms, including the recent appointment of judges to the Superior Courts.

Ms. BWALYA said the Government has also constructed nine new courts and upgraded existing court infrastructure to improve accessibility.

Other measures include the establishment of specialised institutions, such as the Financial Crimes Court and the Economic and Financial Crimes Division, as well as the expansion of Legal Aid Board offices across the country.

Ms. BWALYA said the measures were intended to ensure that equality before the law translates from a principle into a tangible right for citizens.

Meanwhile, Ms. BWALYA held several bilateral meetings to seek support for ZAMBIA’S bid for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term.

The elections are scheduled for October 13, 2026 at the United Nations Headquarters.

This is according to a statement issued to ZNBC News by First Secretary – Press and Public Relations at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of ZAMBIA to the United Nations, NAMATAMA NIEKWA.
