By Justine Akakulubelwa

Zambia and the United States have signed a 2.49 Billion United States Dollars Health Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding.

Under the MOU the United States will provide more than 1.5-billion dollars over five years, while Zambia will increase domestic health expenditure by 975-million dollars.

Finance Minister, SITUMBEKO MUSOKOTWANE, signed on behalf of Zambia and US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, MICH COKER, on behalf of the US government.

And speaking shortly after, Health Minister ROMA CHILENGI says the partnership will secure uninterrupted supplies of medicines for HIV, malaria and tuberculosis, while strengthening disease surveillance, outbreak response and health information systems.

Prof. CHILENGI said the new MOU will also support the recruitment of up to 40-thousand health workers over the next five years.

He says the agreement is designed to preserve Zambia’s health gains while accelerating domestic financing and building a more self-sustaining health system beyond the five-year support period.

And United States Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, MICH COKER, said the partnership marks a shift from a traditional donor-recipient model to one based on co-investment, Zambian ownership and shared accountability.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister, SITUMBEKO MUSOKOTWANE, said the agreement will provide significant relief to the Treasury.

AND Foreign Affairs Minister, MULAMBO HAIMBE, said the signing of the MOU and Data Sharing Agreement redefines Zambia’s longstanding partnership with the United States, while strengthening resilient and people-centred health systems.
