The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an interest in allegations of solicitation and payment of bribes at two Zambian border posts following a video circulating on social media.

The video features a frequent cross-border traveller who alleges the payment of facilitation fees at Chirundu and Livingstone, also known as Victoria Falls Border Post.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, ACC Head of Corporate Communications Joseph Mwenya said corruption at ports of entry damages Zambia’s reputation as a destination for trade, investment and tourism.

Mwenya added that such practices increased the cost of doing business, delayed legitimate travellers and transporters, and eroded public trust.

He said border officials represented the country’s first point of contact and that the impression they left shaped how visitors and traders viewed Zambia.

“The Commission treats these allegations with the gravity they deserve. Corruption at ports of entry damages Zambia’s standing as a reliable destination for trade, investment and tourism,” Mwenya stated.

He reaffirmed Government’s zero tolerance stance on corruption and cited the Anti-Corruption Act Chapter 91 of the Laws of Zambia, noting that the solicitation, offering, giving or receiving of a bribe or other gratification was a criminal offence.

“Facilitation payments whether paid in cash or in kind are bribes and anyone found wanting will be held accountable,” Mwenya said.

He outlined three immediate measures which included taking an interest in the specific allegations at Livingstone and Chirundu, intensifying joint operations with other law enforcement agencies at ports of entry, and encouraging public reporting of corruption.

“The Commission has taken an interest in this matter regarding incidences of bribery at Livingstone and Chirundu Border Posts. The public will be informed of the outcome in due course,” Mwenya said.

He urged travellers, transporters, clearing agents and other border users to report any solicitation or payment of a bribe, any demand for a facilitation fee, and any conduct intended to create artificial delay in exchange for an unofficial payment. It stressed that reports could be made anonymously.

Mwenya warned public officers to desist from corrupt practices as anyone found to have solicited, accepted, offered or paid a bribe or facilitation fee would face the full measure of the law.
