ZCTU URGES ZAMBIANS TO UNITE BEHIND PRESIDENT HICHILEMA

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has urged Zambians to unite behind President Hakainde Hichilema to drive national development, following a peaceful electoral process that returned him to office.

Speaking at a media briefing, ZCTU President Blake Mulala said the union body was satisfied that the country had generally conducted a calm and orderly election. He commended President Hichilema for keeping the internet open throughout the polls, stressing that access to information is vital for democracy and transparency. “There is no loser, no winner in any election,” he said. “Democracy wins and Zambia wins.”

Mr Mulala appealed to political parties and candidates to accept the outcome peacefully and pursue any grievances through lawful channels. He also called on the Government to strengthen efforts against individuals using digital platforms to incite violence or spread inflammatory content, and demanded a thorough investigation into the death of a polling official in Matero Township, saying those responsible must face the law.

Turning to the labour movement’s expectations, Mr Mulala said the new administration should prioritise workers’ rights, create decent jobs and pursue sustainable growth through increased production.

He further called on the Government to award more mining and other contracts to Zambian companies, boosting local participation and keeping more money circulating within the domestic economy.
