The Zambia National Public Health Institute -ZNPHI – is undertaking a project to improve the quality of data on the number of births and deaths recorded in the country.

ZNPHI Project Coordinator, STEPHEN CHANDA, says the Sample-Based Registration System is also capturing information on the causes of death.

Speaking to ZNBC News in Namwala District, Dr. CHANDA said the project will help the country make evidence-based decisions and strengthen planning in the health sector.

Dr. CHANDA said the project is currently being implemented in four provinces, with data collection still ongoing.

He said the system will provide a more concrete estimate of the number of births and deaths occurring in the country.

Dr. CHANDA said a report is expected by the end of 2026, covering findings from Lusaka and Southern Provinces.
