AS Zambia joined the rest of the world in commemorating the World Teachers’ Day yesterday, President Hakainde Hichilema thanked educators across Zambia for shaping minds, nurturing talent and preparing children to contribute to national development.

President Hichilema said no nation could rise without strong, respected and supported teachers, assuring educators that the Government would continue investing in them.

In a message to mark World Teachers’ Day, President Hichilema urged teachers to continue working hard and smart, saying their work extended beyond the classroom and was central to building a better Zambia.

Similarly, First Lady Mutinta Hichilema hailed teachers for their dedication to educating and nurturing children, saying their work provides learners with a strong foundation and contributes to a brighter future for Zambia.

Ms Hichilema said this in a message posted on Facebook yesterday to commemorate World Teachers’ Day, which was being celebrated under the theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.”

And Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet for Administration Oliver Kalabo said teachers occupied a unique and invaluable place in national development because every profession passed through the hands of a teacher.

Speaking during the commemoration in Lusaka yesterday, Dr Kalabo said the Government had recruited 41,422 teachers to address staffing gaps and expand learners’ access to qualified teachers, while continued investment in classrooms, desks, teachers’ houses and other school infrastructure was improving the learning environment.

He said the Government had also expanded the school feeding programme to more than five million learners and was promoting teachers’ financial wellbeing through financial literacy initiatives and access to loans through the Teaching Council of Zambia.

Education Permanent Secretary for Administration Noriana Muneku said the ministry had facilitated the reunification of more than 1,782 couples separated through transfers and deployments, while 10 per cent of recruitment opportunities had been reserved for persons with disabilities.
