By Chembe Mbale Police in Mpongwe have arrested five suspects in connection with an illegal fertilizer repackaging operation. Copperbelt Police Commissioner RAE HAMOONGA says arrests follow intelligence reports about suspicious activities at a farm located on the Mpongwe-Luansobe Road in the Chintimfu area. Mr HAMOONGA said police officers discovered several individuals inside an unfinished building at the farm, allegedly engaged in mixing and repackaging fertilizer. He said a significant quantity of United Capital D-Compound Fertilizer was recovered at the scene. Mr HAMOONGA disclosed other items seized were two heaps of bulk fertilizer mixed with unknown substances, two heaps of a cement-like material, a weighing scale, and two shovels. He said during police interviews, a suspect claimed ownership of the fertilizer, stating he had purchased it from Kalweo Area. Mr HAMOONGA said, however, said the suspect failed to produce any invoices or documentation to verify lawful ownership.
