Dolly Parton Country Music Legend Dies at 80

Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, bringing to an end a six-decade career that made her one of the most recognisable figures in global entertainment. Her death was confirmed by her family on Tuesday.

Born in rural Tennessee, Parton grew up in a large family and developed an early passion for music and songwriting. After graduating from high school in 1964, she moved to Nashville, where she initially pursued songwriting before establishing herself as a recording artist.

Her breakthrough came through a partnership with country singer and television personality Porter Wagoner. She went on to produce some of country music’s most enduring songs, including Jolene and I Will Always Love You. The latter, written as a farewell to Wagoner, later became a global pop phenomenon when Whitney Houston recorded it for The Bodyguard soundtrack.

Parton also successfully crossed into film and mainstream pop. Her 1980 film 9 to 5, which she starred in alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, produced another signature hit and earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. She later appeared in films including The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Steel Magnolias.

Beyond music and acting, Parton was also celebrated for her philanthropy, particularly through her Imagination Library literacy programme, which distributed millions of books to children around the world. She won 11 Grammy Awards and was inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Parton leaves behind a legacy that stretches far beyond country music — as a songwriter, performer, actress, entrepreneur and philanthropist whose work influenced generations of artists and audiences worldwide.
