Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has openly declared his intention to contest for Uganda’s presidency in the 2031 elections, expressing confidence that he will win “by the grace of God.”
In a statement that is already fueling fresh debate about Uganda’s political future, the Chief of Defence Forces and First Son also revealed that his father, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, popularly known as “Mzee,” will serve as his campaign manager.
“Mzee will be my campaign manager,” Muhoozi declared, signaling what appears to be a clear roadmap toward a 2031 presidential bid.
The announcement comes as Muhoozi continues to strengthen his influence through the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political movement closely aligned with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
In recent months, the PLU has undergone restructuring, while posters promoting Muhoozi for the 2031–2036 presidential term have increasingly appeared in public.
Muhoozi’s latest declaration follows President Museveni’s victory in the January 2026 elections, which secured him a seventh term in office.
With Museveni having dominated Uganda’s political landscape for nearly four decades, Muhoozi’s statement is expected to intensify discussions surrounding the country’s political succession.
The CDF has previously publicly supported his father’s leadership while simultaneously building his own political base, and his latest remarks appear to offer the clearest indication yet that he is preparing to take his presidential ambitions to the next level.
Whether 2031 will mark a major political transition remains to be seen, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear — Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has his eyes firmly set on State House.
