POPE Leo says he is not intimidated by Donald Trump following criticism from the US leader over his remarks on the US-Iran conflict.
The Pontiff had also said he has no intention of engaging in a debate with Trump.
Pope Leo recently stated that God does not listen to the prayers of leaders who initiate wars, stressing the need for dialogue in the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran.
In response, Trump described the head of the Catholic Church as “terrible” on foreign policy and “too liberal.”
Speaking to journalists aboard the papal plane en route to Algeria, Pope Leo said he would continue to speak out against war.
He said his duty is to stand for those without a voice and that remaining silent would be a failure of his calling.
“I am not a politician and I’m not afraid of him,” the Pope said in remarks shared in a video by France 24.
“I have no intention to debate with him (Trump). The message remains the same, to promote peace and dialogue. I will continue to speak out loudly against war and call for dialogue. Too many innocent lives have been lost,” he said.
