National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity candidate Gabriel Kibombwe wants the Local Government Elections Tribunal in Lusaka to declare Mwewa Chitambala’s election as Mayor for the City of Lusaka void, and have himself declared duly elected instead.
Mr. Kibombwe says the declaration was made on an incorrect tally of votes, arguing that official records from polling stations show materially different results in his favour, contrary to those declared at the totaling centre.
He also claims the electoral process was violated, denying him full participation, particularly during results verification, after a suspension of counting and totaling was lifted.
He says he was locked out of proceedings in Chawama and Kanyama constituencies, where he alleges the inconsistencies arose.
Mr. Kibombwe’s petition, filed through Munati Chambers, names Chitambala as first respondent and the Electoral Commission of Zambia as second respondent.
