A 35-year-old Malawian national has died after being struck by an unidentified motor vehicle in a hit-and-run road traffic accident along the Chipata-Mfuwe Road in Kasenengwa District, Eastern Province.
The fatal accident is believed to have occurred between 04:00 hours and 05:10 hours on Saturday in the Sangalala area, where the victim, identified only as Jeriam, was reportedly walking along the roadside when he was hit.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba said the driver of the vehicle failed to stop after the collision and fled the scene, leaving the victim fatally injured.
Mr. Mweemba said the deceased sustained multiple bruises to both legs and a deep cut to the forehead.He said the body has since been deposited at Chipata Central Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting formal identification and a post-mortem examination.
Police have since launched investigations to identify both the vehicle involved and the driver responsible for the fatal hit-and-run.
The latest incident adds to growing concern over fatal road traffic accidents involving pedestrians, with police continuing to urge motorists to exercise caution and comply with road traffic laws.
