National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) losing presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu yesterday appeared in a Solwezi Magistrate’s Court, each facing a charge of seditious practices.

The duo arrived in Solwezi yesterday morning from Mukobeko Maximum Correctional Facility in Kabwe where they are in custody for a case of treason.

This is a case in which Mundubile is alleged to have made a Facebook post claiming that he was leading the elections according to the party’s Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) and called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to resume vote counting after the process had been suspended.

Zulu is accused of posting that ‘President’ Brian Mundubile would address the nation and that the audience should remain on standby.

They appeared before Solwezi Principal Resident Magistrate Mambwe Mukonde for plea and possible commencement of trial in the seditious practice case.

When the matter was presented before the court, Director of Public Prosecutions Gilbert Phiri, who led the prosecution team, told Magistrate Mukonde that the State was ready to proceed with the matter.

Mundubile, however, applied for an adjournment because his lawyers from Mulungushi Chambers were not present.

Similarly, Zulu who is represented by Central Chambers and Makebi Zulu Advocates applied for an adjournment to enable the defence to adequately prepare, saying he only received the charge sheet upon arrival at Solwezi Airport.

Mr Phiri said in the interest of justice, the State had no objection to the application made by the two and subsequently the matter was adjourned to October 5 and 6, 2026 for further proceedings.

The duo remains in custody.

Speaking to journalists after the adjournment, defence lawyer Sakwiiba Sikota expressed concern that the State had not explained why his clients were appearing in Solwezi for a matter which allegedly occurred in Lusaka.

“My client only received the charge sheet this morning upon arrival at Solwezi Airport from Mukobeko Maximum Correctional Facility. He needs time to adequately prepare and to be represented by his lawyers.

“The alleged offence is said to have occurred in Lusaka and the arrest was in Kabwe. No explanation has been given why this matter has not been transferred to Solwezi, away from family members and where counsel is not present,” he said.
