Police have launched investigations into alleged aggravated robbery, unlawful wounding and malicious damage to property following violence that erupted during a political campaign rally in Shibuyunji District on Sunday.
According to a statement Zambia Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, the incident happened around 17:30 hours in Nampeya Ward of the Munyati area during a rally addressed by Independent parliamentary aspirant Ibrahim Kabwe Mwamba, Independent aspiring Council Chairperson Mutumba Denise and musician Clifford Dimba, popularly known as General Kanene.
Police say preliminary investigations indicate that a Toyota Land Cruiser carrying suspected UPND supporters armed with machetes allegedly disrupted the rally and attacked members of the campaign team.
During the incident, Clifford Dimba reportedly sustained a cut to the head after being assaulted, while a Mitsubishi Triton registration number BAZ 5004 belonging to Mr. Mwamba was allegedly damaged.
Police further say the suspects allegedly stole an HP ProBook laptop, two mobile phones and K16,000 in cash. The value of the damaged property is yet to be established.
Officers responded to the scene, and Mr. Dimba was issued with a medical report before being referred to the University Teaching Hospital, where he was admitted.
A machete was recovered from the scene and has been retained as an exhibit.
Police have since opened dockets for aggravated robbery, unlawful wounding and malicious damage to property, adding that investigations are ongoing.
The Zambia Police Service has condemned the violence, describing it as a serious criminal matter, and says those found responsible will be identified, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
