BRIEFING | Tonse remnants expect Mundubile election petition by deadline
We Are One Zambia Alliance (WOZA) secretary-general Muhabi Lungu says the Tonse-affiliated grouping expects a presidential election petition to be filed by today’s deadline challenging President-elect Hakainde Hichilema’s re-election.
According to Hot FM, Lungu said the anticipated challenge centres on alleged irregularities in the handling and recording of votes during the August 13 election.
Brian Mundubile has rejected the declared presidential result and previously said his team had gathered evidence for a Constitutional Court challenge.
The expected filing comes despite growing divisions around Tonse. NRPUP, the registered party under which Mundubile contested, has withdrawn from the alliance, while several opposition figures have accepted Hichilema’s victory.
No petition has been confirmed as filed at the time of this briefing. The distinction is important: political statements announcing an intention to challenge the election do not constitute a court petition.
