This is how the administration responded after its trade war offensive blew up in real time.
At midnight on Saturday, Trump imposed 50 percent tariffs on $28 billion of Canadian goods, hitting cement, dairy, honey, and hockey sticks.
Tariffs are not paid by foreign governments. They are import taxes paid directly by American businesses at the port of entry, immediately raising costs for domestic manufacturers and consumers. The White House gambled that unilateral pressure would force Ottawa to yield on trade pact negotiations.

Canada did not blink. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne countered by matching the financial penalty dollar for dollar.
On Tuesday, as reported by the Toronto Star and the Associated Press, Canada announced 50 percent retaliatory tariffs on $27.6 billion of American exports. Effective September 8, Canadian duties will hit U.S. steel, dairy, appliances, farm equipment, and household essentials.
The counter-tariffs strike straight at American farmers and Rust Belt factories that depend on Canadian buyers. When eleventh-hour talks broke down over sovereignty disputes, Trump threatened to expand duties to auto parts, while Canadian leaders moved forward with domestic subsidies to protect their own workforce.
Faced with an economic crisis of his own making and direct retaliation against American industry, Trump offered a map edit.
Lake Ontario is an international body of water governed by century-old bilateral treaties, with New York on the southern shore and Canada’s economic engine on the north. In 2025, Trump attempted a similar maneuver by executive order to rebrand the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”
Now, with a trade war threatening billions in commercial exports, the playbook remains identical.
