Trump Threatens Canada With 50% Tariffs on Cars, Trucks and Steel
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that tariffs on all Canadian cars, trucks, automotive parts and steel will rise to 50% starting January 1, 2027, escalating the trade confrontation between Washington and Ottawa.
Trump accused Canada of imposing excessively high tariffs on U.S. farmers and agricultural products, claiming the trade relationship has created a $60 billion deficit for the United States.
Trump also urged Canadian companies to move production to the United States, saying products built in the U.S. would face zero tariffs.
The announcement comes after U.S.-Canada trade negotiations collapsed, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejecting Washington’s demands. Canada has pledged retaliatory measures as the dispute threatens to further disrupt the deeply integrated North American automotive industry and supply chains.
