By Honester Mshoka

UPND Secretary General BATUKE IMENDA says the Lusaka City Council should be allowed to enforce regulations on street vending without undue interference.

Mr. IMENDA says the UPND supports the council’s decision to relocate street vendors from unauthorised trading spaces to designated markets.

Speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka, the UPND Chief Executive said people seen wearing the party’s regalia while protesting against the removal of street vendors are not members of the party.

Mr IMENDA said UPND members are expected to uphold discipline and should not engage in unlawful conduct.

He said the party supports efforts to keep Lusaka clean, warning that poor sanitation can create conditions that contribute to the spread of diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

Mr. IMENDA said maintaining a clean city is also important in attracting businesses and investment.

He said the local authority is losing potential revenue from vacant market spaces.

Mr. IMENDA has also urged the Zambia Police Service and Council Police to ensure that public service buses operate from designated bus stations.

He said buses picking up and dropping off passengers at unauthorised locations are contributing to congestion and disrupting operations in the Central Business District.

Mr. IMENDA has further called on the council to provide sufficient dustbins across the city to encourage members of the public to dispose of waste properly.
