USS George Washington Arrives in Arabian Sea as U.S. Escalates Pressure on Iran

The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS George Washington has arrived in the Arabian Sea, joining American naval forces in the region as Washington prepares a major new round of economic pressure against Iran.

The carrier is expected to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed for more than 250 days and has been operating in support of U.S. military operations related to the conflict with Iran.

At the same time, the United States is preparing what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has described as the toughest sanctions in U.S. history, targeting Iran’s economic lifelines and seeking to restrict the country’s oil revenues and international trade. Washington is also pressing China to cooperate with the sanctions campaign.

China has opposed unilateral U.S. sanctions and argued that economic pressure is not the way to resolve the confrontation. The issue is particularly sensitive because China remains Iran’s largest buyer of oil, making Beijing a critical factor in Washington’s attempt to tighten economic pressure on Tehran.

The arrival of the USS George Washington alongside the planned sanctions campaign highlights a two-track U.S. strategy: maintaining military pressure in the region while simultaneously targeting Iran through economic measures.

The move comes as the Strait of Hormuz remains effectively disrupted, with oil shipments severely reduced and commercial shipping facing continued security risks. The combination of naval pressure, sanctions and the unresolved dispute over the waterway could further intensify the confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
