ZAMBIA has secured two key leadership positions in the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), having been elected vice-president of the assembly and vice-chairperson of the council for the 2027–2028 term.

The appointments give Zambia a greater role in shaping the strategic direction of the treaty-based intergovernmental organisation, which supports developing and emerging economies in transitioning towards inclusive and sustainable low-carbon growth.

Minister of Green Economy and Environment Gilbert Siame said the election will help strengthen Zambia’s influence in the governance of an institution whose membership has grown to 55 countries.

Dr Siame said this during the 15th session of the GGGI Assembly and 19th session of the council, held jointly on Friday last week in Seoul, South Korea.

According to a statement issued by first secretary for tourism at the Zambian embassy in Seoul Zondi Chilembo, Dr Siame said the appointments will enable Zambia to contribute more actively to the Institute’s leadership and decision-making.

“In these capacities, Zambia will support the leadership of GGGI’s two principal governing bodies. As vice president of the assembly, Zambia will support the President in guiding deliberations of the Institute’s supreme governing body, which brings together all member states and provides overall direction for the organisation,” he said.

The minister said Zambia will also support the Council chairperson in overseeing institutional strategy, annual work programmes, budgets and organisational performance.

Dr Siame said the appointments provide an important platform for Zambia to advance international cooperation on sustainable development, climate action and green investment.

He identified three priority areas for deeper cooperation with GGGI member countries and development partners, including investment in clean energy, electric mobility and battery value chains.

Dr Siame called on partners with access to technology and capital to invest in Zambia’s green economy and help unlock its growth potential.

He also lobbied for continued GGGI support in building national capacity to develop bankable projects, particularly in electric mobility, climate-resilient agriculture and carbon credit generation.

Dr Siame said Zambia will use its leadership positions to promote access to climate finance, technology transfer, carbon market development, renewable energy investment and climate-resilient development.

He further highlighted progress in developing the country’s carbon market, expanding clean energy investment and promoting electric mobility. https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
