By Doreen Chembe

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock says it will step up efforts over the next five years to achieve the US$1 billion beef export target.

Ministry Permanent Secretary MAX CHOOMBE says the Government will work closely with the private sector, livestock farmers and development partners to achieve the goal.

Dr. CHOOMBE was responding to President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’s address to the First Session of the 14th National Assembly.

He said the measures will include strengthening animal disease prevention and control through timely vaccinations, expanding animal disease-free compartments, and improving livestock identification and traceability systems.

Dr. CHOOMBE said the Ministry will also enhance extension services and promote good animal husbandry practices to boost livestock production and improve the quality of Zambian beef.

He said the beef export target and the goal of increasing the national cattle population to 11 million are attainable.

Dr. CHOOMBE said the Ministry will also pursue public-private partnerships to support the development of livestock marketing infrastructure, strengthen veterinary laboratory services and encourage investment across the livestock value chain.

This is contained in a statement issued to ZNBC News by Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Principal Public Relations Officer, BENNY MUNYAMA.
