A 13-year-old girl has died, while three other juveniles have sustained injuries in a road traffic accident in Chitope area of Luangwa District.

The Zambia Police Service has identified the deceased as Joyce Mulengekwa of Paumawa Village, who sustained fatal head injuries and died upon arrival at Katondwe Mission Hospital.

Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Chipo Kaitisha says the accident happened on Saturday, October 10, 2026, around 18:00 hours, when a Toyota Sienta driven by 25-year-old Nyawali Tembo allegedly failed to keep to its near-side lane and hit four juveniles walking along the left side of the road.

Ms Kaitisha says one of the surviving pedestrians sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to Katondwe Mission Hospital, while the other two sustained slight injuries and remain under observation.

The driver escaped uninjured, although the vehicle was extensively damaged. The vehicle has since been impounded at Chitope Police Post pending re-examination by the Road Transport and Safety Agency.

Police have urged motorists to exercise caution, observe proper lane discipline and remain vigilant to protect other road users, particularly pedestrians.
