Germany Investigates Suspected Russian-Linked Weapons Cache Near Berlin

German authorities are investigating a secret weapons cache discovered in a forest near Berlin, amid suspicions that the stash could be connected to Russian intelligence operations and preparations for violent attacks inside Germany.

The cache was discovered in Brandenburg last year and reportedly contained two handguns and ammunition. Investigators believe the weapons may have been deliberately concealed for potential use in covert operations. German federal prosecutors have opened an investigation on suspicion of preparing a serious act of violence threatening national security.

Germany is now seeking the possible extradition of a suspect detained in Romania in connection with the weapons cache. German authorities have not publicly disclosed the identity of the suspect or confirmed the specific targets allegedly being considered.

German media have reported that security authorities are examining whether the weapons were intended for so-called “kinetic operations”, including possible attacks or assassinations against individuals connected to Germany’s support for Ukraine.

The case has heightened concerns in Berlin over a broader pattern of alleged Russian covert activity across Europe, including sabotage, espionage and attempts to disrupt countries supporting Ukraine. Germany has previously prosecuted cases involving alleged Russian intelligence-linked operations.

However, the alleged Russian connection to this particular weapons cache remains under investigation. German authorities have not publicly established that the Kremlin or a specific Russian intelligence agency ordered the cache, while Russia has repeatedly denied involvement in sabotage operations targeting European countries.

The discovery nevertheless adds to growing security concerns in Germany, where authorities are increasingly treating suspected foreign-backed sabotage and covert violence as a serious national-security threat.
