A 19-year-old Lusaka juvenile has been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for causing the deaths of his parents in 2022.
Supreme Court Judge GERTRUDE CHAWATAMA, sitting as a High Court Judge, sentenced BUSHIMBWA MWAKACHEYA today after convicting him on two counts of manslaughter.
On the first count, BUSHIMBWA was found guilty of causing the death of his mother, ALPHONSTAH MWAKACHEYA. He was also convicted on a second count relating to the death of his father, NATHANIEL MWAKACHEYA, on the same day.
The incident occurred on 6 August 2022, while the bodies of the couple were discovered in a garden at their home in Salama Park on 7 August 2022.

Earlier, Judge CHAWATAMA reduced the charges from murder to manslaughter after a medical report established that BUSHIMBWA was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the offences.
In passing sentence, Judge CHAWATAMA observed that the taking of human life has become increasingly prevalent, pointing to drug and alcohol abuse as contributing factors.
She said BUSHIMBWA’s actions had deprived his sister of her parents and added that he would have to live with the consequences of taking his parents’ lives for the rest of his life.
