The Zambia Police has dismissed social media claims that there are 1,180 people in detention on politically motivated charges.
Police Assistant Public Relations Officer, TIMOTHY MALUMO has clarified that the service has not issued or confirmed these figures.
Mr MALUMO has added that the information circulating on social media is false, misleading and does not represent official information.
He has explained that deliberate creation and circulation of false information of this nature can undermine public confidence and damage the reputation of the institution.
Mr MALUMO has warned individuals and social media users against creating, publishing or circulating false information presented as official police information.
He has stated that the police will take appropriate action against attempts to deliberately misrepresent its operations or circulate false information intended to damage its reputation.
In a statement issued today in Lusaka, Mr MALUMO has said the police remains committed to providing accurate and timely information through its official communication channels.
