PUTIN THREATENS UKRAINE’S FARMS—AND THE FOOD SUPPLY OF MILLIONS

Vladimir Putin has openly threatened to intensify attacks against Ukraine’s most vulnerable economic sectors, specifically identifying agricultural production and exports.

He claimed Ukraine “opened Pandora’s box” by striking Russian economic infrastructure. But Russia invaded Ukraine, withdrew from the Black Sea Grain Initiative and has repeatedly attacked Ukrainian ports, grain terminals, silos and agricultural businesses.

Putin then dismissed fears of global shortages, claiming Russia could simply replace the Ukrainian food removed from international markets. That statement exposes the calculation: destroy a competitor, seize a larger share of the export market and treat hunger elsewhere as an acceptable consequence.

Ukraine’s grain and vegetable oil help feed millions of people, including vulnerable populations across Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Disrupting those exports means tighter supplies and higher prices far beyond Ukraine.

This is not the language of a leader seeking peace. It is the threat of a self-absorbed imperial ruler willing to sacrifice Ukrainians, Russians and global food security for territorial ambition in the twenty-first century. History will remember exactly what he chose.
