Zambia has started drafting a new 10-year elephant Conservation Strategy to strengthen the management and protection of its elephant population.
Department of National Parks and Wildlife Assistant Director, BILLY NG’OMBWE, says the strategy will provide a clear framework for managing elephants.
Dr. NG’OMBWE told ZNBC News that the strategy will also help Zambia meet its international conservation obligations.
He said this particularly responds to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora – CITES and requirements of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
Meanwhile, Conservation Force President, JOHN JACKSON the third, said the organization is supporting the renewal of Zambia’s Elephant Management and Action Plan to promote conservation and sustainable use of the species.
Mr. JACKSON said regulated hunting can support conservation by generating revenue for communities and Government.
